Fresh Laundry

Gerville Hall/Istock

I have been using homemade detergent for close to a year now.  I love the way it cleans, the price, and the fact that it last forever.  What I don't love - the smell - or lack thereof.    I have tried to add essential oils to the detergent with no luck.  It smells nice for about two days and then...nothing.  I considered buying dryer sheets and adding a nice fresh laundry scent that way, but our dryer repair man said they damage the drum.  So I resigned myself to having fresh, clean, odorless clothing.  Until today!  I was changing a load and thought why can't I make my own dryer sheet, of sorts?  It wouldn't have fabric softeners in it so it shouldn't damage the drum. So I took an old cloth nursing pad (I'm sure any absorbent piece of cloth would do), put a couple drops of essential oil on it, and threw it into the dryer.  When the load was finished, I opened the door, and a beautiful bouquet of loveliness entered my nostrils!  Success!!  The nursing pad was still strongly scented so I threw it into a second load.  It worked just a great the second time.  Now if I can just remember to wear deodorant every day, I could smell good all the time!

  1. Yay! I've been using flannel squares and a little conditioner, which also takes care of the static cling. It is so nice to have pleasant aromas around...

  2. Ooh good thought. I figure I'm the last one in the world to figure this out, but am still pleased just the same!

  5. Hmmmm, that might be worth a try! I need to see your recipe as well. I got Tide with Febreze for a really good price a couple weeks ago and am seriously addicted to the wonderful scent ... but if there's another way ...

  6. Hi Jeni,
I plan to try your laundry detergent this weekend. I've made my own before but this is a little different. It may work better in our hard water.
I've also been using a homemade deodorant for a while and really like it. I mix it together, place into a one cup jar, and put a lid on top. Yep, I use my fingers to rub a little on each morning but it washes off easily and it works GREAT.
    1/4 cup baking soda
    1/4 cup corn starch
    5 - 6 tablespoons coconut oil
(I also add 5 drops of tea tree oil just because I was having a reaction to store bought deodorant and needed to get that cleared up.)

  7. I love homemade deodorant (weird statement, I know)! I think we use the same recipe, except I use lavender instead of tea tree oil, and I just scoop into an old container. I have to keep it in the fridge so it doesn't get to soft. In the summer it's nice and refreshing, but in the winter - yowza!!
